Urban horticulture: analysis and perspectives on food security from the point of view of the residents of the town of Alto Boa Vista-MT

Abstract

The cultivation of vegetable gardens in urban areas has contributed positively to the health of
the population, offering fresh food guaranteeing greater food and nutritional security. Thus, this
work aimed to make a characterization of urban horticulture developed by residents of the town
of Alto Boa Vista-MT. The survey took place during the month of January 2015, at random in
every neighborhood of the city totaling 106 residences. Using qualitative methodology, by means
of the interview from a semi-structured questionnaire with questions that addressed issues
of cultivation of vegetables in the residences, and the importance of these species for the urban
population. 51.89% of respondents have vegetable garden in their homes considering important
the cultivation of these species, arguing that, fresh and healthy food are cooperating in reducing
expenditure in the family group and still provides them with pleasure in cultivating them.
