About 50% of the waste generated in Brazil is organic, however, as it is not collected separately, it ends up not destined for specific treatment. Composting is a great alternative for recycling solid waste, but it is still underused. This bibliographic review study aimed to verify the benefits of composting by analyzing school-based works on the topic and to encourage the implementation of composting as an environmental education tool, recycling and reduction of solid waste. Composting has been used in the school community as an AE strategy, reducing solid waste and producing humus for vegetable gardens and gardens, avoiding spending on fertilizer and outsourced companies to dispose of organic material. Composting promotes EA through awareness and sustainability. Its implementation is completely viable and sustainable in schools, homes, and MSW management systems, bringing economic, social and environmental benefits.
