Abstract

The present work is an exploratory study on the creation and use of birds other than chickens by farmers of the Grupo Bem-Estar, in the Assentamento 72 in Ladário, MS. Seven women and one man who take care of poultry production were interviewed. Of these, only one does not have poultry other than chickens. The birds found were guinea fowls on 5 farms, ducks on 3 farms, turkeys on 2 and geese and quails on one property. Among these, slaughtered ducks and quail eggs are commercialized, but there is potential for the sale of guinea fowls and turkeys. Although they have the potential to generate income for families, some farmers are giving up their production due to problems of management and mortality of animals
