Abstract

Creole seeds guarantee autonomy for family farming and are part of the history of many families, even persisting in highly adverse environments, such as properties belonging to the integrated tobacco system. Through direct observation techniques and application of a semi-structured questionnaire, a case study was carried out, with the objective of demonstrating how the creole seeds made possible the diversification of tobacco production. The study was carried out in a family of tobacco producers in the municipality of Paraíso do Sul / RS, participants in a rural extension project aimed at the diversification of tobacco production, carried out by an organization linked to the Movimento dos Pequenos Agricultores. It was identified in the study that a participatory ATER promotes constant awareness in farmers and makes them subjects in the rescue and conservation of Creole varieties.
