Monitoring of Community Seed Banks as a tool to preserve the biodiversity of a genetic heritage: a case study in the municipality of Solânea-PB-Brazil

The Community Seed Banks (CSB) are an important strategy for the preservation of crioules seeds, guaranteeing the autonomy of farmers in relation to the markets for productive inputs. This article aims to analyze the biodiversity of creoles seeds in the CSB of the municipality of Solânea-PB-Brazil. The data were collected in a situated and participatory manner, using the BSC Monitoring System. The municipality of Solânea has the largest stock of creole seeds in CSB in the Territory of Borborema-PB (18,66%). The 1.734,04 kg stored in 8 CSB, are distributed in 7 species and 30 varieties: starter beans (673,35 kg; 11 varieties), corn (569,80 kg; 4 varieties), macassar beans (229,75 kg ; 5 varieties), broad bean (227,14 kg; 7 varieties), pigeon pea (18,00 kg), forage (12,00 kg) and oilseeds (4,00 kg) with 1 variety. It is intended to contribute to strategies for the preservation of the region's cultural genetic heritage and the maintenance of agroecological practices.
