Abstract

Since the colonization of Brazil, the way of life and survival of indigenous peoples has changed
greatly. The culture of the white man has drastically influenced the lives of local people. Such
perception can be seen from a resource naturally sacred to indigenous peoples, water. In order
to verify the relationship between children and water, the activities of the “Cofo de Leitura”
extension project, coordinated by the teacher Maria Aparecida da Rocha Medina were carried
out. Their objective is to develop methodologies, reading techniques and textual production in
the indigenous intercultural context from oral and written texts. Indigenous people use their water
for personal hygiene and recreation. During the observation, knowledge and a strong bond
with the river were evidenced because they considered a sacred liquid. Ways of intervention
with techniques that instigated children, the need to care for and preserve the rivers.
