Abstract

This study was motivated by a) the need to know the possible interest of young students in
favor of food sovereignty in Mexico, and b) to evaluate the effectiveness of an environmental
education workshop towards that end. The pedagogical approach was based on Enrique Leff´s
focus towards environmental education, as well as participatory learning. The teaching method
was based on the 5e learning cycle, and a parallel creative activity. The research methodologies
chosen were socially critical and participatory action research. Students in the two groups
under study developed attitudes of responsibility and commitment towards food sovereignty.
The experience with indigenous students suggests the need to include intercultural approaches
in order to develop critical thinking skills through their own ways of knowing.
