Traditional varieties are recognized as important components of agrobiodiversity, with great
interest for agroecology, but with demands and limitations in conservation, requiring a greater
understanding of the issues involved in this process. This work investigated ecological knowledge
about traditional varieties, organizing participatory didactic material. Narrative review of
the scientific literature, analysis of Brazilian public laws and policies and activities with high
school students were made. Questions about genetic erosion in crops, mechanisms and characteristics
that provide ecosystem services, relationships with family farms and conservation
measures have been identified. Knowledge of the values provided by traditional varieties, between
farmers and society, are essential among conservation measures, with guidelines in
Brazilian legislation focused on education, the environment and agriculture.
