Abstract

Promoting healthy snacks based on the consumption of popcorn produced from agroecologically
cultivated local popcorn landraces is an innovation in the school system. The PHCE is a
program developed by the Faculty of Agronomý and the Public Education System. It seeks the
facilitation of learning, the development of work ethics and healthy eating habits by means of
the school farm. This work involves contributions to food sovereignty, the valorization of local
genetic resources, the multiplication of popcorn landraces an the promotion of healthy food.
Seven popcorn landraces were grown and characterized for phenology and diseases. Thirty
plants per accession were artificially pollinated to record qualitative and quantitative traits. Based
on our results we conclude that 50 g of seed is sufficient for each school to seed its plot to
produce the required amount of snack and continue with the project autonomously.
