Identification of criollo varieties in banks of family seeds in Alto Sertão Sergipano, Brazil

Abstract

This survey brings results of the data collection and identification of landrace seeds varieties
of corn and bean stored in family’s Banks of Landrace Seeds in the territory Alto Sertão Sergipano,
in Brazil. For the data collection, a workshop was held in the Lagoa Dantas community,
Poço Redondo municipality in May 2015. In this opportunity, 18 farmers were gathered and we
used a participatory survey technique identified as “Agrobiodiversity List”. Further we also conducted
between May and July 2015 interviews with 28 peasants of the territory.The data obtained
exposed that there is a great diversity of landrace seeds varieties stored on the peasants’
familiar seeds banks. The species with the greatest diversity was of the fast growing beans that
present 18 varieties, followed by corns with 16 varieties, and cowpeas with 8 varieties.
