This study aimed to analyse the supply of socio-biodiversity foods in Brazilian low-budget
restaurants. An exploratory study was carried out in restaurants located in the five Brazilian
regions (n=19), selected through an intentional and non-probabilistic sample. All the available
menus from 2016 were analysed (n=3017). The socio-biodiversity food list for each state
was extracted from Portaria nº 163/2016 and ranged from 19 to 42 foods per state. Only five
restaurants presented socio-biodiversity foods in their menus, limited to three variety of fruits
available up to 102 times in the menus. It is observed that the restaurants have a sub explored
potential to offer socio-biodiversity food, what could contribute to ensure food and nutritional
security and to develop healthy and sustainable agro-food systems.
