Abstract

At the mouth of the Amazon River, twelve hours by boat from the city of Macapá, live traditional
communities that subsist from fishing and açai extraction as main economic activities,
and family farming as their main food security strategy. The objective of this work was to carry
out a participatory diagnostic to build knowledge about the traditional agricultural production
system of the Arraiol do Bailique community, with the purpose of promoting the valorization
and conservation of the way of life of these traditional populations. The results point to a rich
agrobiodiversity (156 species), making up a mosaic of landscapes that integrates backyards,
planting areas, agroforestry systems, forest management and native forest. It is concluded that
families have guaranteed food security and sovereignty, and contribute to the conservation
of local biodiversity, but face enormous challenges of commercialization and access to basic
public policies.
