Abstract

Experiencing along with communities of the Juatinga peninsula (Paraty - RJ) for ten years, the
extension project Roots and Fruits of UFRJ, observes the urban-industrial society’s impacts
on the caiçara’s cultural universe. Currently, the implementation of the ecological sanitation on
the thorps is getting visibility and being boosted by the cooperation between Funasa, FioCruz
(OTSS) and FCT. The registration of this experience is intended to comprehend how occurs
the incorporation of this technology and the impacts of this process on the caiçara’s shared
identity. The experiences revealed the potential of diffusion and appropriation of this techniques
by the local actors, indicating that the ecological sanitation can be an instrument for the
fortification of the communities in their territories and reduction of the ambiental impact from
the human settlement, since it’s built on emancipatory bases.
