Seeds of Semiarid: the experience of family farming at Sertão do São Francisco

In 2015 the Articulation of Brazilian Semi-Arid (ASA) launched the Capacity and Social Mobilization
Program for Living with the Semi-Arid: Management of Agrobiodiversity - Semi-Arid
Seeds, thus expanding the stocking strategy culture, besides promoting and fostering storage
technologies of water for consumption and food production. This action of support and extension
of the practice carried out by peasants aiming to store crioula’s seeds contributes to food
security and sovereignty of families living in semi-arid region. Still little feasible, the practice of
seed stocking and breeding is part, to some extent, of the lives of families living in this region.
The project implemented in this context is based on the principles of agroecology, valuing the
peasant’s traditional knowledge in handling and conservation of genetic resources of region.
