Abstract

Seeds can be stored in family banks on farms for the next harvest. However, many bottlenecks
for the success of this storage have been reported, since it is made using containers that
can influence the conservation and quality of the seeds. This research aimed to know the
different forms of seed storage carried out by family farmers in rural settlements located in the
north of the state of Rio de Janeiro. The interviews were conducted through semi-structured
questionnaires applied to guardian farmers. The results show that 84% of the guarded farmers
interviewed conditioned the seeds in PET plastic bottles, also using glasses and sacks in the
magazine. It has been observed that farmers also use various desiccants and preservatives
including tinder, ash, eucalyptus leaves and storage with crop residues.
