Abstract

Crassostrea rhizophorae is native to Brazil occurring along the Brazilian coast. Its cultivation
takes place in natural surroundings, with the use of suspended structures. Data on environmental
conditions were obtained in municipalities in the northeastern region of Pará. The
communities of fishermen using the native oyster, institutional relations with the state and federal
government and the obstacles were characterized. The municipalities present oysters in
estuarine areas with natural occurrence, already exploited by the extractivist fishing community.
Part of the producers is technically supported with demonstrative unit, however, institutional
relations with the state and federal government are unstable. Oyster farming, in the face of
extractive activity, is well accepted in traditional communities, maintaining the link with traditional
culture, reaffirming the concept of activity providing environmental services to traditional
communities and fishing.
