Agrobiodiversity and food security in a traditional geraizeira community

Abstract

The present work aims to present the results of a survey conducted in October 2016 on the
survey of the main agricultural species and their varieties identified in the memory of traditional
geraizeiros, as well as those still planted by them in the territory. The importance of the survey
is that the rapid transformations for the tours of agricultural systems, with the reduction of the
loss of agrobiodiversity and agri-food homogenization. A participatory observation and a semi-
-structured interview were adopted as methodology. The results of the research demonstrated
that a diversity of varied items in the farmers’ memory is noticeable in numbers with the low
number of varied cultivars, revealing a loss of local agrobiodiversity. However, in spite of such
losses, the generators resist change and continue to be guardians of traditional saber and management
of production and food, using biodiversity and agroecological knowledge.
