In the lands of indigenous peoples of Oiapoque live more than 6.000 people of 4 different
ethnic groups, distributed in 49 villages scattered over 500.000 ha. The Açaizal village has
been notable for the relative success of its results compared to the others, when it comes to
development projects. Through the notes of the experiences learned in the last 5 years working
in the Local Technical Coordination of FUNAI at Oiapoque (the coordination responsible for
ethnodevelopment and environmental management), and the study of previous experiences,
we present indications of why some initiatives are successful in Açaizal village, considering
local environmental quality and a promising future prospect as principles of the success of the
works developed there.
