Abstract

The aim of this study was to present the current scenario in family farming in São Lourenço do
Sul, RS, Brazil, and understand farmers perception on their production systems and its impacts
on environment. Thirty-six questionnaires were applied to family farmers. Rural properties area
averaged 35,54 ha, from which 66,98% are used in agricultural production. Pasture covered
36,68% of the total area, followed by corn (32,83%), soy (15,16%) and tobacco (14,71%). All
producers are conventional. 52,78% stated that they adopt the conventional production system
due to the ease of such system. All producers are willing to convert to an ecological production
system, basing such possibility on health issues. All producers consider environment preservation
important or extremely important. There is a lack of understanding by producers regarding
the impacts of conventional production system on the environment. The region is a potential
target of actions aiming the promotion of agroecology.
