The objective of this work is to systematize local environmental knowledge that underlie the
“alternative” production style of the farmers, in agricultural colonies of Pirané Sur, Formosa.
The hypothesis states that the local environmental knowledge (LEK) socially constructed by
family farmers, historically subjugated by the advance of the monoproductor model, constitute
adaptive advantages and construct the corpus that underpins the bases of an agroecological
transition agriculture. The methodological approach combined symbolic interactionism and
ethnography. As a result, 18 knowledges were identified. Those knowledges, which deal with
the agroecological principles and the perceptions about the forms of production and the native
forest, were analyzed. LEKs allow the adoption of new agroecological strategies to increase
agricultural biodiversity and the integration of subsystems on the farm.
