Abstract

The agroecological practices allow the settler to diversify their production within the precepts of environmental sustainability. However, there are still settlements that instead of diversifying their production, seek the lease of their land. Therefore, this study aimed to discover the reasons that led the settlers of the São Pedro settlement to rent their land. A questionnaire was used to interview the settlers. It was observed that the reasons that led the settlers to lease their land are the lack of technical assistance, marketing difficulties, lack of information and training, and also the immediate profit from leasing. If necessary, public policies aimed at training the settlers, in order to avoid the de-characterization of peasant agriculture.
