Agricultural production in rural settlements located in monoculture areas of the North Coast of Alagoas
Keywords:

The objective of this study was to analyze aspects of the agricultural production processes
observed in two rural settlements located in the North Coast of Alagoas, a region historically
linked to sugar cane monoculture. Data were collected in 2014 and 2015, using documentary
research, field observations and interviews, with semi-structured scripts, applied to settlers and
leaders. The results indicate that the exploitation of sugarcane predominates in settlements,
through modern, conventional production processes, as well as the production processes of
other crops, in most of the lots. Processes that deviate from the agro-ecological approach
advocated in agrarian reform policy. Praxis tuned with the available infrastructure, living experiences
of the settlers, their life trajectories, available social capital, economic capital, model of
agroindustrial production and execution of public policies directed to the settlers.
