Abstract

Productive backyard are the spaces organized in the outskirts of rural houses, for the production
of vegetables, fruits, medicinal and condiment herbs, ornamental plants, roots and vegetables,
in a way that is consorted with several species of domestic animals. The diversity of crops
in backyard points to the resistance of family farming and requires a lot of work by women, who
invest their resources and efforts in the installation and maintenance of integrated production
systems, based on agroecological principles. The objective of the present study was to map
the backyards and identify the strategies used by the women of the District Caiçarinha da Penha,
In Serra Talhada, Pernambuco. Data collection was performed through visits to family and
semi-structured interviews. The result was the diversity of animal husbandry in productive farms,
which ratifies the pluriactivity and heterogeneity of the activities practiced by family farming.
