Agroecology highlighted in milk production: the transition process carried out by Santini Family in Santa Maria-RS

Abstract

This report describes the ecologically based milk production implanted in the property of the
Santini family of Santa Maria/RS. There was a substitution of the conventional production
system by the system of base ecological. A system that has the Voisin Rational Grazing as a
background tool, but where agroecosystem management, agroecological management of soil,
animal welfare and relation between farmers and nature are essential issues. With the implementation
of this system the family may notice improvements to their property and to the herd.
Family income has increased, production costs have decreased, farm investments have increased,
and animals do not get as sick as before. Another improvement observed by the family
was the decrease in the quantity and hard the work on the property, improving the quality of
life of the family. The changes have resulted in an ecologically correct and socially just system.
