Seed production of creole maize jabatão by massal selection

Abstract

Creole seeds are the basis of agroecological production. In partnership with the Borborema
Polo Seed Commission, ASPTA and UEPB, a field of maize seed multiplication of variety
jabatão. The seeds were donated by the farmer experimenter and keeper of the passion seeds
Seu Zé Pequeno. The selection was started with the corn cob at the stage of sweet corn cake,
considering plant height, green mass production, cob size, plant and cob health. From 1kg of
seed was obtained the multiplication of 6kg of seeds. In addition, approximately 60 kg of seeds
were harvested for feeding to the family and animals. The installation of the seed multiplication
field in the family property enables the family to learn about the process of seed multiplication,
guaranteeing the genetic purity of the variety, having seeds for its own consumption, and guaranteeing
extra income for the farming family.
