Abstract

Unconventional vegetables (HNCs) are those that, in certain regions, were part of the meals, but were forgotten and / or devalued by the occurrence of changes in eating habits. We aimed to identify and analyze the commercialization of these vegetables and their knowledge by farmers in the municipality of São Cristovão-SE. Semistructured interviews were applied to three fairgrounds of the Agroecological Fair of the Federal University (UFS), four from the Rosa Elze neighborhood and one from the Eduardo Gomes neighborhood. The significance of the "HNCs" was explained and the knowledge of the marketer about consumption and commercialization of these vegetables was evaluated. It was observed that the farmers' knowledge about HNCs is associated with popular knowledge of medicinal plants. It is concluded that it is necessary to educate the population about the benefits of HNCs as a consumption alternative. It is necessary to implement strategies that stimulate the production and commercialization of these vegetables.
