Abstract

Agroecology is a new paradigm that has become the basis for rural development. The option
of addressing the theme “peasantry and food sovereignty” is justified by its ability to produce
healthier food. Thus, the objective of this study is to associate the importance of the food sovereignty
of the family farmers of the Municipality of Igarapé-Açu with the agroecological principles.
The study was developed with 4 families of farmers, in which interviews were conducted
by a semistructured questionnaire, using the technique “snowball. The interviews raised socioeconomic
information, production characterization, cultivated plants and type of management.
Manihot esculenta Crantz maintained its frequency in all production units, this being the food
base of the population of Pará, due to the cultural aspects, the ease of commercialization and
the incentives granted by the State. The use of agroecological practices makes it possible to
grow healthier foods that are capable of guaranteeing the families’ food sovereignty.
