Bee honey consumption by Minha Casa Minha Vida Program residents in Santarém - Pará. Does the origin influence in the preference?

Abstract

The goal was to know the profile of honey consumers among the Minha Casa Minha Vida Program
residents of the in Santarém-PA, and to identify if the honey origin influences in the preference.
A total of 400 questionnaires were applied, these questionnaires were elaborated to
identify the honey selection criteria used by resident consumers in the residential area. About
the resident’s origin, 53% belong of traditional or riverside communities and 18% are of peasant
origin. Most respondents reported having a habit of consuming honey (85%), with 56.2%
consuming twice a month and 23.1% once a month. Of the respondents, 62.8% buy directly
from the producer, local market or street vendor, which 28.3% choose to buy directly from the
producer. In addition, the species type factor is also determinant for preference, 84.3% prefer
honey from native species. The breeding of these species is done by producers of the local
settlements and rural communities, being an important income source for these families. The
interviewees prefer honey originating from native species and produced by local producers.
