An effective way to involve surrounding communities in the preservation of protected
areas is through education, more specifically through Environmental Education. The
objective of this study was to verify if environmental education can lead to changes in
the environmental perception of students from two schools inserted around the Jaru
Biological Reserve. Through the application of questionnaires the socioeconomic profile
of the interviewees and their perception about the issues related to the issues raised
were identified. The study presents partial data of a broader research that deals with
the environmental perception of students around the Jaru Biological Reserve, and the
results presented only address the perception regarding the use of pesticides. Therefore,
it was noticed that the students’ knowledge regarding the use of pesticides after
the program improved significantly, denoting a positive contribution of environmental
education activities to achieve this result.
